The World Congress will be held June 15-18, 2012 in Cleveland, Ohio. “In the pursuit of excellence in bronchoscopy” is our theme. The organizing committee invites you to submit an abstract for consideration.

The Heinrich Becker Young Investigator Award was instituted in 2012 with an endowment of 30,000 EUROs. The award will honor outstanding research conducted in the field of Bronchoscopy. The award will be given bi-annually during the World Congress for Bronchology and Interventional Pulmonology and World Congress for Bronchoesophagology meeting. The purpose of the award is to recognize up and coming investigators. The prize is intended to financially support travel expenses for the young investigator to attend the World Congress meeting. The ideal candidate is not older than 40 years of age. Three prizes will be awarded: First Prize $2,000; Second Prize $1,500; Third Prize $750. An Award Jury, installed at each World Congress will review and select the winning abstracts.
Heinrich Becker, MD, FCCP began his career with primary training as an internist, specializing in gastrointestinal diseases. This was followed by a second career as a pulmonologist. As his main interest was always in endoscopy, he became directly involved in the development and evaluation of several new diagnostic and interventional technologies, including among others: autofluorescence, endobronchial ultrasound, the VRI, electromagnetic navigation and development of the Ultraflex*R* Nitinol stent for the airways. Dr. Becker’s publications include original articles on theses technologies and textbook chapters. He is a member of many international societies and serves on the editorial boards of several peer-reviewed journals. In addition, he took a major interest in teaching and supporting young physicians world wide, especially in developing countries. Dr. Becker holds academic positions at Harvard University, the University of Nevada and at St. Marianna University School of Medicine in Kawasaki, Japan.

The Geoffrey McLennan Memorial Award has been established for the 17th World Congress for Bronchology and Interventional Pulmonology. This award will be given to the investigator presenting an outstanding abstract that details contributions related to imaging in interventional pulmonology. The award will be selected from all abstracts that are submitted and presented at the World Congress. A modest honorarium will be presented to the awardee to help defray the cost of current or future travel for scholarly pursuits.
Dr. Geoffrey McLennan was a dedicated pulmonologist who contributed greatly to the field of imaging in pulmonary medicine. He pioneered the use of virtual bronchoscopy for guidance of procedures, taught dozens of pulmonary fellows and graduate students the importance of understanding imaging, and worked tirelessly to improve the lives of his patients. Dr. McLennan mentored other pulmonologists and graduate students who have gone on to very successful independent careers. Dr. McLennan passed away in July of 2010, leaving behind a devoted family, students and colleagues.

The Professor Udaya B.S. Prakash Award has been established for the 17th World Congress for Bronchology and Interventional Pulmonology. This award will be given to the investigator submitting and presenting the best abstract related to safety procedures. The winning author will receive a modest monitory award and a certificate of recognition.
Udaya B.S. Prakash, MD has been a Master Educator in the field of Bronchoscopy with an emphasis on safety during procedures. Throughout his career, Dr. Prakash has helped dozens of countries develop educational programs in Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine.
Dr. Prakash’s innumerable accomplishment include: Founder and Past President of the American Association for Bronchology and Interventional Pulmonology, Past President of the World Association for Bronchology and Interventional Pulmonology, Past President of American College of Chest Physicians, Past Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Bronchology and Interventional Pulmonology, as well as Mayo Clinic Proceedings. He was also the President of the 7th World Congress for Bronchology, which was held in Rochester, Minnesota in 1992. Dr. Prakash is currently associated with the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, USA and is Professor of Medicine at the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine.
